Riverdale welcomes two resident rabbits
At the beginning of February, residents at Riverdale Care Home were excited to welcome their pet rabbits, Cookie and Crumble, into the home. When the pair first arrived, the team introduced them to the residents, making their way around the lounges and residents’ rooms for a hello.
Organised and led by Home Manager Renata Sulugiuc and Westgate Healthcare Director Tara Teubner, residents and family members now have the opportunity to stroke, care for, learn about and interact with two beautiful cuddly rabbits.
Residents have been reliving their own personal pet and animal memories, alongside enjoying the therapeutic benefits of holding or stroking an animal.
Resident Wendy accepted a role as Bunny Supervisor, whereby she has agreed to the terms and conditions to:
- Be enthusiastic
- Pet the Rabbits at least 25 times a day!
- Cuddle and love the rabbits regularly
- Keep the rabbits company
Wendy said “I am so happy to be responsible for looking after Cookie and Crumble, they make me smile everyday.”
Animal therapy brings people together, keeping residents mentally active and engaged with an abundance of benefits, including improved mood, increased social interaction and physical activity, creating a calm atmosphere with an increase in positive emotions.
Renata, Home Manager, said: “All in all, our rabbits, Cookie and Crumble, have been an amazing gift for our residents . . The rabbits are spoiled with lots of cuddles and treats, and everyone loves having them around. It has been great to see the joy they have brought to our family. Pets are so good for everyones wellbeing, we are so thrilled that we can have this at Riverdale Care Home.”
