Westgate House Care Centre, part of Westgate Healthcare, brought the excitement of the FIFA World Cup to residents, families and care teams. This was achieved through a football-themed celebration designed to inspire reminiscence, encourage physical activity and bring people together through a shared love of the beautiful game.
Bringing the World Cup to Westgate House Care Centre
On a sunny summer afternoon, the home’s courtyard was transformed into a lively football arena as care teams represented England, France, Spain and Argentina in a series of friendly challenges. These activities included dribbling through cones, penalty shoot-outs and keepy-uppy competitions. Residents and family members cheered from the sidelines. Meanwhile, some residents were supported by care teams to step onto the pitch themselves, taking turns to score goals and join in the fun.
After plenty of laughter, encouragement and good-natured rivalry, Team England emerged victorious. Everyone hoped it might prove to be a good omen for the national team. Residents then took centre stage to present the winning team with medals and certificates. This rounded off the afternoon with a celebration of everyone’s enthusiasm, teamwork and sporting spirit.
A Lifetime of Football Memories
For many residents, the afternoon sparked memories of a lifetime spent following football and sharing the game with family and friends.
One resident, Tony, has supported Arsenal for more than 70 years and thoroughly enjoyed joining in the day’s celebrations. As part of Westgate Healthcare’s Make a Wish initiative, which helps residents fulfil meaningful personal ambitions, Tony will soon realise a lifelong dream. He will visit Emirates Stadium for the first time to enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of his beloved club.
Stan and Chris Share Their Story
Another resident, Stan, and his wife Chris reflected on the role football has played throughout their lives together.
“Stan has played football since he was a young boy,” said Chris. “We had two boys who he encouraged to play football, and he was Secretary of Wormley Football Club for six years. Our whole life revolved around football. Every Saturday and Sunday we were taking the boys to matches, helping to run two teams, and even our social life centred around football. Now our youngest son runs a football team himself, and his two boys absolutely love football too. Football has always been at the heart of our family.”
Married for 55 years, Stan and Chris have shared a lifelong love of the sport. When asked whether Stan had been following the World Cup, Chris said: “Yes, as best he can. He has the matches on in his room and we’re both rooting for England. We’re really looking forward to the England v Argentina semi-final.”
The tournament also brought back memories of England’s famous 1966 World Cup victory.
” We both remember it fondly. Stan watched it at home when he was a boy. Football has always been such a big part of our lives.”
Reflecting on the afternoon, Chris said: “We’ve really enjoyed today. It’s been lovely being out in the sunshine and fresh air. The team here are brilliant at putting on entertainment and activities like this.”
