Westgate Community Hero Week – Making a Difference in Our Communities

Community Hero Week

At Westgate Healthcare, being part of our local communities means more than simply caring for those who live in our homes. It is about supporting local organisations and finding meaningful ways to give back.

This year, three of our homes Byron House, Burford House and St Pauls Care Centre took part in Community Hero Week, each finding their own way to make a positive difference within their local communities.

Supporting Age UK Buckinghamshire

At Byron House, the team chose to support a charity particularly close to their hearts, Age UK Buckinghamshire.

The team prepared homemade cakes and donated raffle prizes for a coffee morning at Meadowcroft Centre in Aylesbury. They also joined in with an exercise class, making it a brilliant opportunity to spend time with local people and get involved.

The day gave the team a wonderful chance to meet new people, strengthen community connections and show how care homes can play a role within the communities around them.

Linda Activities Lead – “I think it’s so important for our residents to feel connected to the community around them. I’m always looking for new opportunities, people and places for our residents to enjoy and be part of. Seeing them get involved, meet new people and enjoy new experiences is what makes it all worthwhile. Community connections can bring so much to residents’ lives, and I’m very proud to help create those opportunities at Byron House.”

Giving Back to Christ Church

Over at Burford House, residents and team members rolled up their sleeves to support Christ Church. The original plan was to paint the church shed, but unfortunately, the rain had other ideas. Instead, the team turned their attention to giving the church’s main hall a thorough deep clean.

Despite the change of plans, it was a fantastic day of teamwork, volunteering and community spirit. Residents and team members were involved, bringing plenty of enthusiasm and lively comments along the way.

It was a great reminder that even the smallest acts of support can have an impact on the organisations and people within our local communities.

Supporting Those in Need

At St Pauls Care Centre, Community Hero Week provided an opportunity to support DENS, a local charity helping people experiencing homelessness, poverty and hardship.

Throughout August, residents, families and team members came together to collect essential food bank donations. The generosity shown by everyone involved was truly wonderful.

Robin, resident at St Pauls personally headed out shopping to purchase items to donate to the collection. His thoughtful contribution was a wonderful example of how everyone can play a part in supporting others.

The team were also delighted to welcome Jack from DENS to St Pauls to collect the donations, with one resident in particular going the extra mile.

DENS commented “Thank you to everyone at St Pauls Care Centre for helping our Foodbank provide vital support for local families and individuals struggling with poverty. A special thanks to Robin for his inspirational act of kindness – what a superstar.”

St Pauls also welcomed their local fire crew for a special visit with residents. The firefighters shared more about their work, the equipment they use and how they help keep the local community safe. Residents were eager to learn more about life as a firefighter. They thoroughly enjoyed meeting the team and seeing their equipment up close.

Community at the Heart of Westgate

Community Hero Week gave our teams an opportunity to connect with the people and organisations around them.

We are incredibly proud of Byron House, Burford House and St Pauls Care Centre for getting involved and showing the difference that time, kindness and teamwork can make.

At Westgate Healthcare, we believe that being part of the community means being willing to give back to it. We look forward to continuing supporting the communities our homes are proud to be part of.
