Team Members Take on Fire walk Challenge in Support of Michael Sobell Hospice

firewalk 2026

On Friday 20th March, Westgate Healthcare’s Group Wellbeing Manager, Lucie Baker, and Marketing Assistant, Lucy McShane, stepped out of their comfort zones to take part in a fire walk in aid of Michael Sobell Hospice, for the ongoing commitment to community support.

Held at the Michael Sobell Centre at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, the evening brought together more than 50 participants, all ready to take on the challenge. After arriving between 6:30pm and 7:30pm, participants attended a safety briefing before preparing for the walk, which began at 8:15pm.

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants were taught techniques to safely walk across hot embers reaching temperatures of up to 578 degrees. The focus was on building confidence and using the “mind over matter” approach.

The event welcomed a wide range of ages. Friends and family also attended to show their support, adding to the energy of the evening as each person took their turn across the fire.

Speaking after the event, Lucy McShane shared:
“We were incredibly proud to represent Westgate Healthcare and support such an important cause. Taking part in the fire walk was an unforgettable experience. It really was a case of mind over matter. I’ll admit, I was nervous about burning my feet, but with the correct training, it felt warm at most. The training gave us the confidence to push past that initial fear, making the whole experience both empowering and rewarding”

Together, Lucie and Lucy raised close to £120 for the hospice, contributing to a wider fundraising effort. These funds will support both Michael Sobell Hospice and Harlington Hospice in continuing to provide vital palliative care to individuals and families.
