Spotlight on Staff – Renjini Nair

A Journey of Dedication and Growth

Renjini began her nursing journey in India, graduating in 2007 and working as a dedicated nurse. Driven by a passion for exceptional care, she courageously moved to England in [year] to advance her healthcare career, leaving her family behind.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

“In 2020, while I was working at another care home, Mrs. Patel approached me with such understanding and empathy,” Renjini recalls. “She recognised my dedication and offered me a position at a Westgate Healthcare home in Hampden. Though I had no knowledge of the area, Mrs. Patel supported me practically and emotionally, making the transition so much easier.”

Rising Through the Ranks

Starting at Hampden Hall Care Centre on the first floor in Dementia Nursing, Renjini’s hard work was quickly recognised. Within eight months, she was promoted to Clinical Lead and, shortly after, to Unit Manager for the Cedar Unit—the largest and most demanding unit at Hampden Hall, with 48 residents and over 40 team members. Renjini has excelled in this role since January 2022, transforming the unit with improved team morale, retention, and quality of care.

A Supportive and Inspiring Leader

Renjini’s leadership style is approachable and supportive, and her ability to inspire others is at the core of her success. She fosters growth within her team, encourages professional development, and ensures every resident receives compassionate, personalised care. Her empathy—for both residents and team members—sets her apart.

Recognised for Her Dedication

Juliana Mensah, Hampden Hall Care Centre Manager, says: “During supervisions and appraisals, team members frequently share how supported and happy they feel in their roles. Renjini’s fairness and approachable, responsive nature are just some of the many qualities that have deservedly earned her a nomination for the Westgate Star of the Year award.”

Renjini wins Westgate Star of the Year award at the 2023 Westgate Healthcare Awards.

Empowering Others Through Leadership

Reflecting on her leadership approach, Renjini explains: “For me, it’s equally important that my colleagues have the opportunity and freedom to achieve their full potential. I want to motivate people to give their best.” This philosophy drives her day-to-day approach, as she balances her responsibilities with a constant focus on the well-being of both her team and the residents they care for.

A Day in the Life of a Unit Manager

“A typical day for me begins with a handover from the night team, re-assigning team members to residents, and conducting nurse rounds and supervision,” she explains. “The rest of my day involves audits, admissions, discharges, liaising with social workers, and always checking in with my team and residents to ensure their well-being.”

A Passion for Her Role

When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Renjini says: “Everything! Every day is different and challenging, but I love it. The management team is so supportive, and the directors take the time to get to know every team member. That’s something I’ve only experienced at Westgate Healthcare.”

Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead

In 2023, Renjini was named Westgate Star of the Year, recognising her exceptional leadership, compassion, and dedication to both her team and residents. Now completing her Level 5 qualification, she remains committed to promoting independence and well-being, while looking forward to future opportunities.
