Residents at Meadowhill Care Home recently enjoyed a wonderful day out in Southend-on-Sea. The day was filled with seaside views, delicious food, laughter and plenty of special memories.
Days out and outings are an important part of life at Meadowhill Care Home. They give residents opportunities to enjoy new experiences, revisit favourite places and spend meaningful time together. The trip to Southend was certainly a day to remember.
A joyful journey to the seaside
The fun began as soon as the group set off. Roy, Westgate Healthcare’s wonderful minibus driver, was behind the wheel. The journey was filled with singing and chatting. There were also a few treats along the way as the residents took in the sights and looked forward to their day by the seaside.
Exploring Southend Pier
Once in Southend, the residents enjoyed a stroll along the seafront. After that, they tucked into a delicious traditional fish and chips lunch.
After lunch, the group headed onto the famous Southend Pier, travelling along the pier on the Eastern Escapade pier railway.
The train journey gave the residents the chance to enjoy beautiful sea views. They saw these as they travelled towards the end of the pier. Along the way, they watched people fishing and enjoying the seaside with their loved ones.

A special visit to the RNLI station
For resident Robin, the visit to Southend Pier was especially significant. As a lifelong member of the RNLI, visiting the RNLI station at the end of the pier brought back many wonderful memories.
The group explored the station together before Robin chose a special memento from the RNLI shop to remember the day.
Ice cream by the seaside
Of course, no trip to Southend would be complete without an ice cream!
To finish the day, the residents visited Rossi’s Ice Cream Parlour, where everyone enjoyed a delicious sweet treat by the sea. There were plenty of smiles and laughter as they enjoyed their ice creams together.
The Southend day out was a wonderful opportunity for the residents to spend time together, enjoy the coast and make new memories. From singing on the minibus and enjoying fish and chips, to travelling along Southend Pier and visiting the RNLI station, there was lots to do. Sharing ice creams made it a day full of friendship and fun.
At Meadowhill Care Home, opportunities to enjoy new experiences, maintain interests and make meaningful memories are an important part of everyday life. Days out such as this allow residents to enjoy the wider community, spend time with friends and continue doing the things they love.
