Burford House Brings Everyone Together for a Community Bake-Off

Burford House Bake Off

In true Merry Berry style, Burford House was transformed into a day of baking, creativity and friendly competition. On 17th September residents, families and team members came together for a very special bake-off.

What started as an idea shared between members of the team soon came to life with a little planning, plenty of enthusiasm and, of course, lots of cake!

From an idea to a delicious reality

The idea for a Burford House bake-off was first suggested last year, and this year it became part of the home’s Community Week celebrations – giving everyone a chance to have some fun. The team got the word out around the home with posters, conversations with residents and families, and plenty of encouragement to get everyone involved.

From lemon drizzle cake and marble cake to cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, chocolate cookies, banana bread and cupcakes, there was a large variety of homemade treats on display.

Everyone had a part to play

The bake-off really came to life as everyone found their own way to join in.

Roger, Rosemary and Peter, residents at Burford House, were among the main participants. Each bringing their own interests and personalities to the day. Roger was particularly excited about baking pizzas, while Peter got involved with baking cakes. Rosemary took on a completely different role.

Alongside Tinashe and Head Chef Alex, our Lifestyle Pioneer Rosemary joined the judging panel. Taking her role as Burford House’s very own food critic very seriously.

She tasted her way through the delicious entries, helping the panel decide on their favourites. She was very proud to be at the heart of the action – and we think she may have discovered a new career!

Taking on a new role, having her say and receiving recognition for her contribution gave Rosemary a real sense of pride and involvement. It’s moments like this that remind us that meaningful activities don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, giving someone a role that reflects their interests and personality is enough to make them feel valued, included and part of something special.

A proud moment for Roger

One of the most memorable moments came when Roger received the prize hamper on behalf of his wife. She had baked the delicious lemon drizzle cake. Roger was incredibly grateful and made every effort to get up and receive the hamper as everyone cheered.

His pride and excitement captured exactly what the bake-off was all about: Celebrating people’s contributions and giving everyone a moment to feel recognised and proud.

More than just baking

For the team at Burford House, the most rewarding part of the day wasn’t just seeing the finished bakes. It was seeing everyone enjoying the experience together. There was friendly competition, encouragement and plenty of support between residents, families and team members.

The bake-off created an uplifting environment where everyone could contribute as per their own interests and abilities. Whether that meant baking, tasting, judging, cheering someone on or just enjoying being part of the day, everyone had a role to play.

It was particularly special to see younger family members getting excited about the bake-off and joining in alongside residents. Bringing different generations together in this way created a wonderful sense of community.
