All Aboard for a Day to Remember: Barry’s Big Wish Comes True

Barrys Big Wish

A very special day was recently enjoyed at Burford House Care Home, as Barry, one of our much-loved residents, had his Big Wish brought to life.

A journey filled with memories

Barry has always loved trains, so his wish was to experience a railway journey once again paired with something just as important to him, a pub lunch with his daughter, son and son-in-law. With the support of Westgate Healthcare, this meaningful wish became a day to remember.

The day began with excitement as Barry and his family made their way out for a special trip together. Setting off on the Metropolitan line from Chorleywood to Amersham. Barry was instantly immersed in the experience, from the moment he stepped onto the train, it was clear how much it meant to him – with the familiar sights, sounds and movement of the railway bringing back many happy memories.

Once the train ride came to an end, the group headed to The Boot Pub, in High Wycombe where they enjoyed lunch together before returning to Burford House. Spending quality time with his family, while reliving a passion he holds close, made the day truly special for Barry.

Creating moments that matter

At Westgate Healthcare, granting wishes is about far more than outings, it’s about building memories, and giving residents experiences that feel personal and meaningful. Seeing Barry so happy reminded everyone involved why the Make a Wish initiative is so important.

The day wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the Burford House team, including Birinder, Activities Lead, Roy, Minibus Driver, and Lucie, Group Activities and Wellbeing Manager, who worked together to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Alina, Home Manager – “Barry was absolutely delighted when we told him he was the winner of the Big Wish. Seeing how excited he was, and then watching him enjoy every minute of the experience, was incredibly special for our whole team.”

A special message from Barry’s daughter, Lynette

I wanted to write to you to tell you what a wonderful day our dear Dad thoroughly enjoyed yesterday thanks to the granting of his ‘wish’ on the wish tree at Burford House.

The sheer joy on Dad’s face was so lovely to observe, lots of smiles and, although he finds it difficult to process things now, it was indeed a treasured memory for him (and us). Burford House has been exceptional in every way since my Dad became a resident there last Spring. It has been the perfect place for our Dad to live in, surrounded by the care, love and support given by all the wonderful staff and feels like an extended family whenever we visit.

Thanks again to Westgate and huge credit to everyone involved in Dad’s special day.

We know videos speak louder than words, so take a moment to watch and see just how much Barry’s day out was enjoyed by everyone.

About the Make a Wish initiative

Westgate Healthcare’s Make a Wish programme has been running across all homes since 2020. Residents are invited to share their wishes throughout the year, with homes granting monthly requests. Larger dreams are entered into the Big Wish draw, offering residents the opportunity to enjoy truly memorable experiences. For Barry, this day was about reconnecting with what he loves most – a moment he and his family will keep for a long time.
