Our residents’ top 3 favourite activities

Here at Westgate, we adore spending time with our residents, and work hard to put on a programme of interesting activities for them all year round. These activities are not just a good way to help the time pass; they are an essential element of a nurturing care home environment.

Participating in meaningful, enjoyable activities in the home helps older people to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing. When they’re having fun joining in, they are less likely to feel lonely, to become depressed or to spend too much time focussing on their illnesses and ailments.

There are huge bodies of research to back up the notion that activities are good, and not just for the residents either. Our care workers love to join in with planned activities, and these are a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other better too. Here are three top activities as chosen by residents at Westgate house Care Home in Ware.

1. Craft Class is a huge favourite here – particularly with the ladies. The residents really enjoy making things they can put to good use such as bags or ornaments to display in their rooms or throughout the home.

2. A good old Pub Quiz is very popular with the residents. Beer, wine, snacks and a competitive quiz to keep minds sharp. This is sometimes done digitally as well through the projector for picture/video quizzes (but will be held in our very own pub when it is open!)

3. We organize many trips out and these always go down well with our residents. Especially in the summer when the weather is nice (most of the time!). Trips to garden centers and local places of interest are amongst the favourite outings.

We’re committed to providing person-centred care and activities, which is why our activities programme is packed full of suitable, meaningful activities, tailored to individual needs. We always encourage relatives and friends to pop in and join in with our activities, so if you’d like to come along, just ask one of our team what we’ve got coming up.
