Meet the Manager of Westgate House
For nearly a decade, Nancy Currie has been at the heart of Westgate House Care Centre, where compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to personalisation in care have defined the home’s ethos. Since October 2014, Nancy has called Westgate House her second home, serving as the Registered Home Manager and ensuring that every resident feels valued, respected, and cared for.
Born in Northern Ireland, Nancy embarked on a journey into social care at the young age of 17. With over 42 years of experience spanning various roles and environments, she has gained a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of the field. Nancy’s extensive background in social care has provided her with a wealth of knowledge, which has been instrumental in her role as the leader of Westgate House.
Before joining Westgate House, Nancy spent 12 years at Leonard Cheshire Disability, an experience that profoundly shaped her approach to care. “It was at Leonard Cheshire where I truly began to understand the support needs of disabled and vulnerable adults,” Nancy reflects. “The residents I served there introduced me to the concept of personalisation in care—an ethos that I have carried forward into every aspect of my work at Westgate House.”
Personalisation is more than just a philosophy for Westgate House; it is a holistic approach that ensures residents have choice and control over their lives. This ethos has become the cornerstone of the care provided, “We strive each day to achieve a level of care that respects the individuality and autonomy of each resident,” Nancy says. By focusing on personalisation, Westgate House creates an environment where residents feel empowered and engaged in their own care.
Despite having regional responsibility for nursing homes like Westgate House in the past, Nancy had never managed one directly. However, since taking on the role of Home Manager 10 years ago, she has embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. “Managing Westgate House has been a deeply rewarding experience.” Surrounded by a dedicated team who share her passion for high-quality care, Nancy has cultivated a community where both residents and staff thrive. Nancy is proud to lead a group of compassionate and skilled professionals who work tirelessly to support the residents and each other. “I am fortunate to be surrounded by a great team who support me and our residents daily,” Nancy says. This collaborative and supportive environment is key to maintaining the high standards of care that Westgate House is known for.
Jomol Paul, Head of Clinical Services at Westgate House said, “I have had the privilege to work with Nancy for the last 7 years, her dedication and commitment have not only profoundly impacted the lives of the residents and the staff team she leads but also transformed Westgate House into a highly respected care home in the community. Nancy has created a nurturing and supportive environment where residents feel safe, valued, and well-cared for. Her hands-on approach and strong presence within the home ensures that she is always accessible to both staff and residents, addressing their needs promptly and effectively. Nancy ensures that she meets with every resident that comes to live in our home and make every effort to get to know the residents and their families. Nancy’s efforts to delegate and train the management team, including myself and the unit managers, ensures the smooth operation of the home even in her absence. This not only highlights her strategic foresight but also her commitment to developing future leaders in the field of Health and Social Care.”
Louise Atherton, Quality Director, shares her perspective: “We are continually evolving, seeking out new ways to enhance the care and support we offer. With Nancy’s leadership, Westgate House remains committed to providing a home where residents feel safe, respected, and in control of their lives. With a career rooted in social care and a deep understanding of the needs of vulnerable adults, she has made Westgate House a place where residents are not just cared for—they are empowered to live their lives to the fullest.”
