Chestnut Manor welcomed traditional seaside donkeys to their summer BBQ

Residents of Chestnut Manor Care Home were treated to a unique and joyful summer event that combined the simple pleasures of a barbecue with the therapeutic benefits of animal interaction. The care home organized a special day that featured not only delicious grilled treats but also a visit from two charming donkeys, much to the delight of the residents, team members and guests from the local community.

The idea behind the event was to create a memorable experience for the residents, “We wanted to bring something truly special to our residents,” said Rosie Care Home Manager. “Animals have a wonderful way of lifting spirits, and a barbecue is a classic summer tradition that everyone enjoys. Combining the two seemed like a perfect way to create a day that our residents would cherish.”

Research has shown that interaction with animals can provide significant emotional and psychological benefits, particularly for elderly individuals. Donkeys, known for their gentle and patient nature, are especially well-suited for such visits. Throughout the day, the donkeys roamed the care home’s garden, allowing residents to pet and feed them. For many, this simple act of kindness brought back fond memories of time spent with animals during their youth.

Alongside the donkeys there was plenty of entertainment on offer. Magician Graham Scott wowed the patrons with an array of close up magic and tricks. Singer Robert Jerome rounded off the afternoon with a wonderful performance of songs from a range of genres. Guests were also able to take part in hook a duck, tin can alley, guess the sweets and enjoy a local ice cream van in a tribute to the Great British seaside holidays.

The barbecue was equally enjoyed by all, featuring a spread of grilled favourites, including burgers, sausages, and a selection of vegetarian options. This was served with corn on the cob, pasta salads, rice and an array of desserts including a chocolate fountain. Head Chef Bradlee and the team loved getting on the BBQ to cook for the local community.  Staff members made sure that the event was fully accessible, with plenty of seating in the shade and assistance for those who needed help getting around.

Overall, the event was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended.

“The smiles, the laughter, and the stories shared today will stay with our residents for a long time,” Lewis More, Customer Relations Manager reflected. “It’s days like these that remind us of the importance of community and the simple pleasures that can bring us all together.”
