Intergenerational relationships: Tonwell Primary School visit Westgate House Care Centre
Residents at Westgate House Care Centre welcome pupils from Tonwell Primary School as part of a new programme to build intergenerational relationships.
Westgate Healthcare, a family-owned and run care group with more than 20 years’ experience in providing specialist and residential care, has partnered with their local primary school to encourage students to interact with the residents by sharing stories and taking part in fun activities.
Pupils at Tonwell Primary School have been visiting the residents at Westgate House each week to take part in fun activities and exchange life stories, whilst creating valuable opportunities to both learn new skills.
With the generation gap widening due to fast changing lifestyles, research* has found that intergenerational bonding has many benefits for everyone. The benefits include enhancing social intelligence, preventing isolation and loneliness, the understanding and acceptance of aging, and improving self-worth and self-esteem. Also, it has shown to improve mental health so that people can perform better on memory tests, and those with dementia also experience positive effects.
Nancy Currie, Home Manager at Westgate House, said:
“The residents at Westgate House Care Centre are delighted to be visited by some of the pupils from Tonwell Primary School, and we’ve seen excellent engagement between our residents and the students. This is something we’re really passionate about at Westgate House, and we will continue to partner with local organisations in order to benefit our residents.”
Hannah Moore, Teacher at Tonwell Primary School, said:
"Our visits to Westgate House Care Centre have been invaluable for the children. They have loved sharing their experiences with the residents, learning new skills and making new friends. The children particularly enjoyed making ice cream, planting sunflowers and singing songs. We look forward to seeing you all again after the summer holidays!"
