Care Home Resident, and Football Enthusiast, gets his Big Wish Granted

We at Westgate Healthcare are extremely motivated to improve our residents’ wellbeing, the ‘Big Wish’ initiative was introduced to give our residents the opportunity to have their ‘Big Wish’ granted, creating an exceptional tailored experience for the winner to enjoy. Each year, we grant two big wishes that residents from across the care group have wished for. Each home puts forward one wish, and this is drawn out of a hat by the team at head office. In the summer, our ‘Big Wish’ winner was picked and announced by Managing Director, Sita Patel, on social media: “And this year’s big wish goes to David from Hampden Hall Care Centre in Aylesbury, who has wished for a theme or event linked to West Ham football club.” West Ham enthusiast, and Hampden Hall resident, David, was thrilled when he walked into the lounge to find his neighbours, and team members, surprise him with a West Ham United FC themed party. Surrounded by claret, yellow and blue balloons, everyone enjoyed a singalong to ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles,’ a West Ham favourite, while enjoying a deliciously themed buffet. As part of his ‘Big Wish’, David was gifted the latest West Ham shirt, signed by all the players, a football, and a personal video, kindly sent by Ex-West Ham legend, Tony Gale. David, who lives with dementia, watched the video from Tony Gale attentively while holding on to his newly gifted shirt. David’s wife, Madeline, who joined in on the celebrations, at a safe distance through the window, was thrilled to see the smile on her husband’s face, an expression that David’s wife hasn’t seen much of this year due to visiting restrictions. Madeline, Wife of David, said: “I really appreciate all that you do for my ‘dobby’, this means so much to my family and me. He has always loved West Ham Football Club from growing up in Upton Park as a child.” Thomas, Care Home Manager, said: “It is crucial for our residents to access things that are important to them. The granting of wishes enables us as a company to fulfil the residents’ dreams and have the opportunity to receive things that they thought were never possible. David has always had a passion and love for football; particularly West Ham Football Club as this was his local team. So having a signed football shirt from his childhood favourite team along with a personal video message from Legend Tony Gale really made his day along with lifting his families spirits at such a troubling time”. The next Big Wish will be granted early next year. Westgate Healthcare is a family-run care group with care homes across Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Essex.
