Kingfisher Nursing Home Couple Celebrate 70 Years of Love
This Valentine’s Day, Kingfisher Nursing Home in Cheshunt will celebrate a couple’s 70 years of love.
Kingfisher couple, Jean and Keith, are no strangers to romance and make a habit not to miss Valentine’s Day. This year, the couple submitted a wish to enjoy a romantic meal in the conservatory with their nurse, Naomi, serenading them with her guitar.
Here at Westgate Healthcare, we feel that it is essential to create an environment that promotes independence, fulfilment, happiness and excitement for residents living in our care homes. Our ‘Make a Wish‘ initiative was designed to give residents the opportunity to have their unique wishes granted, whatever they may be, creating an exceptional and bespoke experience for them to remember.
The story of Keith and Jean began over 70 years ago in Maynard’s sweet factory, London, where Keith met Jean while at work.
Keith, having a sweet tooth, asked Jean for almonds and over time, they took a liking to one another and continued their sweet exchanges until the day Keith asked Jean out on a date. After that, Keith said: “the rest was history!”. Jean and Keith became a married couple on the 1st December 1951.

In their later life, Jean joined Kingfisher Nursing Home as a resident, and her husband Keith would visit her twice a week, gifting his wife with flowers and other treats. In addition, the couple connected by phone every day and during the pandemic, Keith visited Jean’s window during rain or sunshine.
As the months passed, Keith found himself needing extra support and missed his wife dearly. He made the decision to move into Kingfisher Nursing Home with his wife, where they could resume sharing their lives together.
Jean and Keith shared a few wise words about what they think the key to a happy marriage is.
Jean said: “A happy marriage needs work. You have to talk and fix a problem, you don’t just move on.”
Keith said: “A happy marriage is about laughing and making memories. Love just happens.”
