Better Together – Meet Gordon & Nancy
Having your loved one move into a care home, after many years of living together, can be a difficult transition. For Gordon and Nancy, staying apart wasn’t going to be an option. In May, it was decided that Nancy required specialist care and so she moved into her new home, Westgate House Care Centre in Ware, Hertfordshire. Luckily for Nancy, her husband was right beside her. Gordon moved into Westgate House the following month and continues to be by his wife’s side, heading over to her room daily to spend some quality time together. As he sits next to his wife, Gordon smiles, “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” When speaking to the team, it’s clear the love Gordon has for his wife, his face lighting up when he talks about their journey together. Their story began, when Gordon had just returned from the Palestine war and was struggling to find a job after landing in the UK. Gordon was walking down the street when a ‘lovely looking girl’ had caught his eye. Nancy was only nineteen at the time, and Gordon was ‘taken by her,’ so he plucked up the courage and asked her out on a date. They later went on to marry and have three beautiful children. Eventually securing a job as a Pilot, Gordon travelled the world, whilst Nancy stayed at home to look after their children, regularly receiving postcards and photos from Gordon’s travel experiences. When given the chance, he would often take his family away with him, enjoying holidays to Spain and Turkey. Some years ago, Gordon became seriously ill, but with hard work and perseverance, Gordon overcame it and got back to his full health, something that he credits Nancy for. Gordon remembers Nancy saying, “You are going to be alright. Keep taking your medicine and don’t stop.” Married for 66 years, Gordon wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, other than being by his wife’s side. “When you’ve travelled a lot, you don’t want a lot else.
