Ashview Goes Above and Beyond to Keep Residents Entertained in 2020!

After temporarily suspending visits to keep our residents safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team at Ashview Nursing Home in Widford, Hertfordshire, have been thinking of new, and exciting ways, to keep our residents’ spirits high. In the spring time, the residents were gifted with pet chicks! From getting ready to hatch in the incubator, to running around the garden, watching our Ashview chickens grow has played a pivotal part of our residents’ wellbeing. All the residents enjoy visiting their pen, chatting away to the chicks, while collecting fresh eggs for breakfast. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics may have been postponed, but Ashview’s Olympics continued to go ahead! This summer, the residents and team members took part in a number of activities to suit every ability, including; swimming, boxing, gymnastics, weightlifting, riding, cycling, golf, uneven bars, and martial arts. Those who didn’t participate still showed their support by cheerleading and scorekeeping. Towards the end of the summer, it was time for the closing ceremony, with everyone gathering around to watch the torch be passed on to one of Ashview’s sister homes. It was a day full of celebration, with everyone singing and dancing. The Ashview Olympics wasn’t the only competition to take place in the home this summer! ‘Westgate in Bloom’ is a friendly annual contest between our sister care homes, and is judged over four categories; ‘Longest Runner Bean’, ‘Best Flower Basket’, ‘Best Sensory Garden’, and ‘Most Innovative Creation’. Each home was tasked with renovating their gardens. The team at Ashview got to work, transforming their garden, and all their hard work paid off! They were delighted to find that Eileen’s Runner Bean, which she carefully nursed over the summer, won the ‘Longest Runner Bean’ category! Our residents have been settling down in the afternoons, ready for another Ashview Productions performance. The idea formed when one day, Home Manager, Daniela Danciulescu, dived into her own fancy-dress box, and decided to act out a show with the help of some of our residents alongside team members. Daniela was thrilled to see all the residents’ smiles! Since then, the team have showcased a variety of shows, including; Beatles, Grease, Henry VIII, Rome and Juliet, Minions and even Red Riding Hood. The shows have been a massive hit, with the residents coming up ideas on what the next performance will be. Resident, Eileen expressed her delight; “We are so lucky here at Ashview! We all love getting involved in the performances; I’m the narrator, and everyone loves to do their part in the play. It puts a big smile on everyone’s faces.” Our residents love to party, so in October, everyone got dressed up to celebrate Oktoberfest 2020! The Chef cooked up some tasty pretzels, washed down with steins of German beer! It was a great day, with lots of singing, and dancing involved. The past six months have been exceptionally difficult for the care home sector, and it is noteworthy that Ashview had no COVID-19 cases at all. It has been equally difficult for the residents as no visiting was allowed, but the staff were exceptional in organising activities on a daily basis to ensure the residents were still able to have fun and laugh.” Carehome.co.uk review from a relative of a resident from Ashview. We have been working tirelessly to ensure our residents can still see their loved ones safely. This November, resident, Eileen and Home Manager, Daniela, were excited to cut the ribbon and officially announce the opening of our new Visitation Pod! It’s fantastic witnessing our residents’ faces when meeting with their loved ones. Ashview’s Home Manager, Daniela said: “The team at Ashview strive to connect and bond with all of our residents and their relatives. Their wellbeing and happiness are a priority for us, especially during this challenging time, and we are always thinking of innovative ways to keep our residents smiling.” The team’s hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed, with the care home winning the ‘Outstanding Achievement of the Year’ Award by the Hertfordshire Care Providers Association (HCPA). Ashview Nursing Home has also been nominated as a finalist for ‘Care Team of the Year’ award, by both the HCPA and the Great British Care Awards (GBCA). The GBCA Gala Awards night will take place in April 2021. If you would like further information on how we can support you or your loved one’s care needs, please call 01279 841 090.
