A Love That Lasts: Resident Couple Celebrate 70 Years of Marriage at Westgate House Care Centre
The 28th August marked a truly special occasion at Westgate House Care Centre as Maureen and Roy celebrated their 70th Platinum Wedding Anniversary—a milestone that few couples reach and one that speaks volumes about their enduring love.
Roy became a resident of Westgate House in June 2023, and Maureen often visited him. During the Christmas season, eager to spend more time together, Maureen decided to stay with Roy for a short respite. However, as her stay drew to a close, both Maureen and her family made the heart-warming decision to make her stay permanent, as she had grown to love the community at Westgate House.
The couple’s love story began many years ago on an ice-skating rink, where Maureen was chatting with friends. Roy, seizing the moment, skated over to introduce himself, but fate had other plans—he slipped and fell right at Maureen’s feet, much to her amusement. That moment sparked a romance that would lead to a lifetime together.
After courting for a time, Roy was called up for National Service in the Army. Realising that becoming a paratrooper would provide better pay, he switched roles to save up for their wedding. Following their nuptials, the couple honeymooned in the sunny seaside town of Bournemouth.
They first settled in Palmers Green before moving to Cheshunt, where they started their family. Today, they are the proud parents of three daughters who visit regularly, a testament to the close-knit family they’ve built. Over the years, Maureen and Roy have shared many holidays across the UK, always cherishing the time spent together.
These days, the couple continues to enjoy each other’s company at Westgate House. They meet for lunch every day and participate in activities together. Maureen eagerly joins in, while Roy finds joy in simply being by her side.
To celebrate their remarkable anniversary, we raised a toast with some bubbly and enjoyed a delicious cake.
