A Lifelong Dream Realised: Emma Adu’s Journey from Aspiring Nurse to Home Manager at St Pauls Care Centre

Since childhood, Emma had a clear aspiration to work in the care sector. She recalls, “From a very early age, I knew that I wanted to become a nurse or midwife; the idea of helping those in need truly resonated with me.”

Emma’s nursing journey began in her home country of Ghana, where she completed her nursing and midwifery training. In 2003, she was given the wonderful opportunity to work in the UK.

She started her professional career as a nurse with Southern Cross Healthcare in 2004, following her adaptation training. Emma worked there until 2009, when she learned about a new care home opening in Hemel Hempstead—St Pauls Care Centre. She applied for the role of Unit Manager, was offered the job, and joined the Westgate Healthcare family. Emma comments: “From the day I started at St Pauls, I never looked back and have now been with the company for 15 years. I am immensely grateful for the support from the directors and my colleagues, as numerous opportunities have arisen from being part of this incredible team.”

From 2009 to 2011, Emma served as Unit Manager for the dementia floors, finding it a deeply rewarding experience and enjoying collaborating with the dedicated nurses and carers on the team. In 2011, she was promoted to Deputy Home Manager/Clinical Lead, a role she held until 2020. Emma comments: “This period was particularly exciting for me, and I had the chance to complete my Level 5 NVQ certificate in Management, which really helped me excel in my role.”

In 2021, Emma was promoted to her current position as Home Manager of St Paul’s Care Centre. She says, “This role is incredibly special to me, and I cherish working with the team, residents, and their families. It has been a privilege and an honour to progress within the company, and I am grateful to have done so at St Pauls Care Centre.”

Tara Teubner, Westgate Healthcare Director, shares her perspective: “Having had the privilege of witnessing Emma’s career journey within our Westgate Healthcare family, I can attest to her unwavering passion and dedication to both her team and our residents. Emma exemplifies the core principles and values of our company, making her an invaluable asset to our team.”
